飾られているアルファベットの文字は1930年代に考案されたと言われている。
エルメスの収蔵庫に埋もれているプレートに描かれたアール・デコ風の25の文字。考案者とされているのは名もない女性「マドモアゼル・D」。エルメス社の歴史書でさえもこの女性について知る手がかりが少なく、わかっているのはおよそ60種のデザインを手掛けたということ。その一つが幾何学的なアールデコ風のアルファベット。1925年以降アールデコのデザインが勢いを増し、ドイツではバウハウスの最盛期を迎えていた。エルメスも新時代の息吹を求め「マドモアゼル・D」のアルファベットの魅惑に心惹かれた事がうかがえる。その証拠に、その後これらの文字はさまざまなアイテムに象られていった。
エミール・エルメスとロベール・デュマにアルファベットのデザインを提案したアーティストは何人かいた様だが、その中でもこのスケッチのたどたどしさが作者の初々しさを偲ばせる。美術学校を卒業したばかりの若い女性が帽子をかぶり手袋を着け、早朝、足どり軽くフォーブル・サントノーレに向かう様子が目に浮かぶ。いずれにしても、「マドモアゼル・D」が文字の歴史に一役買ったのは間違いない。
「マドモアゼル・D」のアルファベットは誕生から80年以上の時を経てエルメス・レザー製品の新コレクションの主役に躍り出た。
都会的でダイナミックな装いのもと、《ケリー》や《プリュム》バッグとリズムに乗り、颯爽と街をいく。ただ姓名のイニシャルにとどまらず、その人のシンボルとなり、知らぬ人からは卓越したデザインとして。
ミシェル・レリスが『ゲームの規則、ビフュール」に記した「アルファベットは大股で飛び立ち、あるいは疾駆する。翼を飾り、剣士の如く振る舞う文字」の様に。

The letters of the alphabet that are displayed are said to have been invented in the 1930s.
